Top 10 Adobe Lightroom Tips. Tip Number 2 - Virtual Copies
As a photographer coming back from a shoot you often have a large number of images that need to be presented back to client in different forms. For example I often put up a gallery of colour images and another one of Black and White and yet another in Sepia. It would be very wasteful of disk space to copy the original files and modify the copied images.
Adobe Lightroom provides a facility called a virtual copy which allows you to work on different version of the same image without the waste of making a full copy. However it can be tricky to figure out how to make this work for a large number of images. e.g. how is it possible to take a batch of 300 images make virtual copies of them all but only change the copies into Black & White?
Here is the workflow:
- Make sure that you have a keyword created that matches what you are trying to do eg ‘Black & White’
- Select all of the images that you want to copy.
- Create a virtual copy using the right mouse click - ‘Create Virtual Copy’ or choose the option from the Photo Menu.
- At this point you will have new virtual copies of your selected images. The important point is that these virtual copies are selected and can be marked.
- Assign the ‘Black & White’ keyword to these selected images.
- If you like you can also create a new collection at this point to further separate the images away from the main group.
- In this way you are building valuable meta data tags into your images and will be able to filter later to bring out all B&W images etc.
